Book Beginnings on Friday

Book Beginnings on Friday is a bookish meme sponsored by Katy at A Few More Pages. Here's what you do: share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading on your blog or in the comments section . Include the title and author so we know what you're reading. Then, if you are so moved, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line, and if you liked or did not like that sentence. Link-up each week at Katy's place.

Here's mine from The Trail of the Red Diamonds by L. Ron Hubbard:

I first ran across the trail in a hospital, two months after leaving the Gran Chaco behind me. As souvenirs of that continual war I had collected two bullet holes and a case of malaria, and I was certainly in no condition to go racing off to China the way I did.

He is sci fi, yes? It's not a genre I'm all that excited about - except that I keep finding exceptions to the rule. So, I got my sci fi buddy Amy to give me some recommendations and I'm going to keep exploring. Are you a sci fi fan? I certainly like this beginning...
